What is measured
The rail profile is the cross-section of the rail head. From it come side wear, vertical wear, gauge and the position of the rail head, on both vignole and grooved rails. KZV measures the profile without contact, with profile cameras that work by laser triangulation, at the speed of the trolley. During the run the software detects side wear, gauge and the top of the rail head automatically; no reference profile is needed for that. In the evaluation, in KRAB 11 or Gekon 11, the measured profile is compared with a reference profile, the nominal one or an earlier measurement, which gives the total wear and the data for grinding planning (grinding analysis, GQI reports).
Which system?
- Profiles together with track geometry. The profile cameras are an add-on to KRAB Heavy and KRAB S-LIGHT, so geometry and profiles come from one run; VIPER does the same on grooved tram rails, and TURTLE does the same, towed at up to 30 km/h.
- Profiles together with corrugation. GEKON Modular (walking speed, easy to lift off during traffic) and the towed GEKON Big Foot record rail wear and rail corrugation in one pass.
Measuring software: KrabDroid 3.0 for the KRAB family and VIPER, RC Droid 3.0 for GEKON, Krab OnBoard on Windows.
